Moon Area Basketball
After falling just short of a WPIAL Class 5A Boys Basketball Semifinals appearance in the championship game, the Moon Area High School Boys Basketball showed resilience by making an impressive run in the PIAA Class 5A Boys Basketball Tournament, advancing all the way to the third round of states.
For a team that has battled all season in one of Western Pennsylvania’s toughest classifications, the Tigers proved they could compete with anyone. Even after the disappointment of losing in the semifinals of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League playoffs, Moon regrouped and continued its season with determination and confidence.
A big reason for the team’s success has been the leadership and talent of brothers Jackson and Brody Bauman. The Bauman brothers have consistently led the Tigers on both ends of the floor, providing scoring, defense, and energy whenever the team needed it most. Jackson’s ability to create offense and knock down key shots has made him one of the team’s most reliable scorers, while Brody has contributed with tough defense, rebounding, and timely baskets. Together, the duo has helped set the tone for the entire roster.
However, Moon’s run through the state playoffs has not been a one-man—or even two-man—show. The Tigers’ success has been built on strong teamwork and contributions from several key players who stepped up throughout the season.
Senior guard Caden Kopay has been an important part of the lineup, bringing leadership and consistency to the backcourt. His ball handling and decision-making have helped the Tigers control the pace of the game and keep the offense running smoothly.
Forward Caleb Waclawski has also played a major role, using his size and physicality to battle in the paint. Whether grabbing rebounds, defending inside, or finishing around the basket, Waclawski has provided the toughness every successful playoff team needs.
Another key contributor has been AJ Buford, whose athleticism and versatility have allowed him to impact the game in multiple ways. Buford has provided valuable minutes with his scoring ability and defensive effort, helping the Tigers stay competitive in close matchups.
Depth has also been crucial during Moon’s postseason push. Players like Braeden Stuart and Thad Longwell have stepped up in important moments, providing energy off the bench and making plays when their team needed them. Their willingness to do the little things—diving for loose balls, playing defense, and moving the ball—has helped strengthen the Tigers as a complete unit.
Throughout the state tournament, Moon has shown the kind of determination that defines successful teams. Each game has required focus, discipline, and teamwork, and the Tigers have continued to respond to the challenge.
For the seniors especially, this playoff run represents the culmination of years of hard work. The chance to compete deep into the state tournament is something every high school athlete dreams about, and Moon has taken full advantage of the opportunity.
Regardless of how the season ultimately ends, the Tigers’ journey to the third round of states is something the school and community can be proud of. With strong leadership from the Bauman brothers and valuable contributions from Kopay, Waclawski, Buford, Stuart, and Longwell, Moon Area basketball has proven that teamwork and determination can carry a team a long way.
And for this group of players, the run isn’t just about wins and losses—it’s about leaving a legacy for future Tigers to follow.
