Sports are one of the most essential ways to bring the athletes and students at Moon Area High School together, but programs like Unified Basketball show how athletics can also promote inclusion and understanding within Moon township. Unified Sports, supported by the Special Olympics organization, bring together students with disabilities to compete for their high school team.
Unified Basketball allows athletes in life skills programs to participate in various competitive sports outside of bocce. While working alongside partners from the Partners in Physical Education classes, these teams practice regularly and scrimmage against Cornell High School’s Unified Sports Team.
Even though Moon Area won the first annual Unified Sports soccer tournament back in the fall of 2025, the goal extends beyond winning games. Partners focus on providing opportunities and inclusion at Moon. Being part of a team can build confidence and help students develop perseverance, teamwork and responsibility. At the same time, the partners gain insight in empathy, patience, and leadership.
Friendships that develop during practices and games reach beyond the court. From participating in unified sports, barriers begin to fade between special education and general education students. The Unified Partners in Sports creates an environment where students feel comfortable to be themselves and cheering for one another.
The basketball tournament held in February consisted of two constellation games and one seeded game to continue to the championship for every team. Hosted at West Allegheny’s high school, athletes were provided snacks and a lunch by the Nutrition Group.
To conclude, Unified Basketball is about more than competition. It encouraged Moon Area to build a community where every student feels valued and respected. Unified Partners in Sports demonstrated that inclusion is something that can be practiced and celebrated every day.
