As graduation season approaches, many high school seniors are preparing to move into a college dorm. While the excitement of decorating a dorm room is fun, creating a packing list can help students avoid stress and ensure they have everything they need for a successful first semester.
A well-organized college packing list should focus on these main categories:
- Cleaning supplies
- Bedroom essentials
- Bathroom and kitchen supplies (depending on dorm)
- School supplies
- Miscellaneous
- Health essentials
For cleaning, students often forget that they will handle keeping their living space tidy. Basic supplies such as paper towels, toilet paper, disinfecting wipes, window cleaner, shower cleaner, a broom, mop, vacuum, trash bags, dish soap, and laundry supplies can make dorm life much more manageable.
Students should also consider the type of dorm they will be living in. For bedroom supplies, essentials may include bedding, throw pillows, blankets, mattress toppers, storage bins, laundry baskets, desk lamps, decor, and organizational items for makeup, jewelry, etc. Since dorm rooms are often small, storage cubes and under-bed organizers can help maximize space.
If students are living in a suite-style dorm with a shared bathroom, they should pack bathroom necessities such as towels, washcloths, shower shoes, a shower caddy, toiletries, toilet paper, and hand soap.
Students living in traditional residence halls with community bathrooms may need fewer cleaning supplies but should still bring hygiene and shower essentials.
Kitchen supplies will vary depending on dorm policies and available amenities. Students with a kitchenette may benefit from bringing dishes, utensils, cups, food storage containers, dish soap, and a microwave or air fryer.
Along with a backpack, students should bring notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, sticky notes, index cards, scissors, graph paper, staplers, tape, and planners. Many colleges also require a calculator and laptop for coursework to help students stay on top of things.
Many of the most useful dorm essentials fall into the miscellaneous category. Items such as an air purifier, chargers, extension cords, power strips, portable chargers, command hooks, books, speakers, and storage cubes can make a dorm room more functional and comfortable. Students should also include daily items such as wallets, purses, headphones, cameras, and alarm clocks.
Health supplies include over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen, allergy medicine, cough drops, and cold medicine. A small first-aid kit with bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment, medical tape, and a thermometer can be extremely helpful when minor illnesses or injuries occur.
Although every student’s needs will vary, creating a checklist months before move-in day can help students feel ready to begin their next chapter!
