For most high school athletes, individually qualifying for a state championship is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. For Elise Ashcroft, it has become an annual tradition.
The 12th-year distance runner from Moon Area High School has qualified and ran at every PIAA state cross country championship. Adding this final race to her season every year is a remarkable and rare accomplishment that highlights her talent and determination.
From the moment she put on a Wings of Moon uniform as a kid, Ashcroft has been a consistent competitor on the course. Her freshman year, Ashcroft surprised upperclassmen by placing 11th among the top runners in the WPIAL, earning her first trip to the state meet in Hershey.
Since then, Ashcroft has continued to improve every year, setting personal records, leading teammates, and helping establish Moon Area girls cross country as one of the top programs in the WPIAL (District 7).
“To qualify for the PIAA State Cross Country meet is quite an achievement! To do so in 4 years in a row puts you in elite company. Elise is only the 3rd Moon Area female cross country athlete to qualify for the PIAA state cross meet 4 years in a row (2022-2025). The other two Moon Area runners were Lexa Gass (2002-2005) and Mia Cochran (2018-2021)” said Moon Area cross country coach, Coach Frank Todd.
“Elise’s desire to compete at a high level, her work ethic, and talent have allowed her to obtain this achievement. Having an athlete of her caliber on our team helps raise the bar as to what’s possible for our future runners. We have been fortunate to have her senior leadership this year on our team!”
This season, Ashcroft finished 22nd at the WPIAL meet with a time of 19:24.60, securing her fourth consecutive spot on the PIAA championship starting line. Beyond the numbers, she has served as a role model for the team environment and younger runners, cheering on teammates during practices and meets, while never failing to make her coaches laugh.
When asked about her achievements, Ashcroft gave credit to the team.
“It’s very positive and friendly. People are always nice and willing to help you with anything you need, like a ride home or just someone to talk to,” she said. “I love the team and will be sad when I have to leave it.”
As Ashcroft takes a break to prepare for the final track season of her high school career, she anticipates continuing her athletic and academic career by running at the collegiate division 1 level.
Ashcroft maintains a legacy of not always trying to be the best, but to be consistent, have leadership and perseverance that will inspire Moon Area runners for years to come. As you watch college athletics, be aware of the name Elise Ashcroft in the NCAA’s next four years, as she will be making her collegiate debut next fall.
