Advanced Placement courses give students the chance to take on college-level work while still in high school. They require dedication, time management, and strong academic skills, but they can also offer college credit. After reviewing all the options available, I conducted a survey with a couple seniors. The majority said that AP U.S. History and AP European History were the easiest, while AP Biology and AP Chemistry were the hardest.
English
AP Language and Composition emphasizes nonfiction reading and rhetorical analysis. Students practice forming arguments and persuading the audience in essays. This class prepares students for advanced research and writing skills they’ll need in college. AP Literature focuses on analyzing novels and short stories. Students engage in discussions and interpretations of texts. Expect plenty of reading and analyzing throughout the year.
History
AP European History covers European history from the Renaissance to the present and students learn important movements and leaders. Students learn to analyze primary sources and construct arguments through DBQs and other FRQs. Despite the heavy content, seniors in my survey described AP Euro as one of the easier APs. AP US History takes students through the complete story of the United States, with students learning how to analyze documents and write essays, like AP Euro. Although there are many assignments, students still find APUSH easier compared to other AP sciences. AP Gov examines the U.S. political system and how it came to be. Students participate in discussions and analyze case studies to better understand how American democracy works.
Math
AP Calculus AB & BC require strong math foundations. AB introduces limits, derivatives, and integrals, while BC goes further with series, advanced integration, and parametric. Expect a steady workload of problem sets and test prep. AP Stats mainly covers data analysis. Students complete projects and reports while also preparing for the AP exam. This course can also take this class as a CHS class.
Science
AP Biology is an advanced dive into evolution, genetics, ecology, and cellular biology. Labs and studying are a major part of the workload. Seniors ranked this as one of the hardest APs.
AP Chemistry is challenging and math intensive. The difficulty comes from both the pace and depth of material. Alongside AP Bio, it was rated one of the hardest AP. In AP Physics students complete labs and problems that rely on algebra skills. It requires consistent practice but is a strong option for students interested in engineering or physical sciences.
Computer Science & Art
AP Computer Science Principles introduces programming basics and the broader impact of technology on society. Students complete projects and presentations in addition to exam preparation. AP Art History covers art from prehistoric cave paintings to contemporary works, exploring how culture and religion shape artistic expression.
Taking an AP class is a serious commitment, but each course offers something unique. Based on senior feedback, students looking for an accessible first AP experience might try APUSH or AP Euro, while those ready for heavier workloads may test themselves with AP Biology or AP Chemistry.
