Your Moon Area High School speech and debaters are off to states!!! Moon is sending six students in four different events to states this year at Bloomsburg University. This is one of the highest numbers the program has ever sent and is a huge testament to all their hard work.
Three members/officers that are going to the state tournament gave a statement about their role on the team and their excitement for the event.
Shaurya Kapoor, Treasurer, participates in the Congressional Debate event, which consists of a room of 12-18 legislators. These students, acting as legislators, speak on real congressional legislation. They take either the affirmative or negative side of each bill. They must be very prepared, as there is a questioning period following the speeches. After everyone has gone, the legislators vote on the issue.
Shaurya is very excited to be “competing alongside the brightest minds in the state of Pennsylvania.”
His favorite memory is qualifying for the National Catholic Forensics League Grand Tournament, which is in Chicago in May. Good luck in the Windy City!
Maria Abdelsayed, Historian, also participates in Congressional Speech and Debate, or Congress. She is very excited for the higher level of competition at States, and looks forward to the sense of accomplishment it will bring.
Speech and debate has taught her to “effectively argue and develop a point clearly.”
Sophia Shetty, Vice President, also does Congress, which seems to be a Moon strong suit. She applies both logical skills and passion to Congress and is excited for the better competition at States.
Sophia loves that “all the bills are different, so you really get to learn a lot about the events.”
Going to States is a huge accomplishment for these Moon students, and requires extreme dedication. Good luck at States to everyone going and remember to have fun!
