Moon Area sophomore, Haley Smarsh, racking up wins one match at a time, was recently back-to-back WPIAL champion in the girls 130-pound weight class. Haley’s opponent was also a WPIAL champion from the previous year, so it meant a lot for her to defeat another WPIAL champion. Since Haley is only a sophomore and has 2 WPIAL championships under her belt already, she could be the first 4-time champion in WPIAL wrestling history. Haley was also recently featured in the Sports Illustrated article listing the top Pennsylvania high school girls’ wrestlers in 2025. Other honors that Haley has received include athlete of the week selection from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. In addition to wrestling, she also plays football, rugby, and softball. Haley started wrestling when she was only five years old and got into the sport because her brother was involved in wrestling. Since Haley is the only girl wrestling in Moon, she trains with the boys’ wrestling team during the week, which has pushed her to work hard in practice. This also gives her an extra advantage when wrestling against other girls on the weekends. Haley hopes to continue her wrestling career into college, but she is not set on any particular school just yet.
