For Marvel lovers, the wait is finally over as “Captain America: Brave New World” will be released in theaters on February 14th. The film is rated PG-13 and runs for 1 hour and 58 minutes. This is the fourth installment in the Captain America film series and was directed by Julius Onah. “Captain America: Brave New World” is based on Marvel Comics American superhero character Sam Wilson/Captain America. Anthony Mackie stars as Sam Wilson where he finds himself embroiled in an international incident after successfully intercepting an illegal sale of adamantium in Mexico with the help of Joaquin Torres. Danny Ramirez plays Joaquin Torres/Falcon, a friend of Sam Wilson. Other big names include Harrison Ford who plays Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk who is the newly-elected president of the United States. Liv Tyler returns as Betty Ross, Thaddeus Ross’s daughter.
Reviews of the film have been mixed and are mostly poor. It received a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes which is categorized as “rotten” which is given to any film with a score below 60%. Critic Ty Burr of the Washington Post awarded the film 1.5 stars and described the film as “humorless” and a “pixel-pounding mishmash” that did not tell a coherent story. Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post stated the film “is another major disappointment from the crumbling Marvel Cinematic Universe.” He described the animation as “cheap and cheesy” and noted it lacked “excitement and emotional satisfaction.”
Despite the lackluster reviews, Deadline reported the film is projected to open with earning $94 million over Valentine’s Day and President’s Day weekend, which should enable it to recoup its $180 million budget over time. However, to be considered a success, it would have to earn double its production or $360 million. According to researchers at the University of California, Davis, negative pre-release reviews do not always correlate to box office flops. So maybe there is still some hope for Captain America.
