From January 7th -31st 2025, California had a tragic start to the new year with 337 wildfires and a total of 57,636 acres of land burned in the Los Angelous metropolitan area and San Diego County. These devastating fires resulted in 29 fatalities and 16,244 structures destroyed. These are the most devastating wildfires in the region in the last four decades, authorities are still investigating the direct cause of these fires. On January 27th, California got some much-needed rain which greatly helped with the fires but caused mudslides due to the lack of plant life. Evacuation orders are still in place, at its worst ordering 180,000 people to evacuate, although as of February 3rd, the fires were 100% contained. California as well as help from other states, has taken 1400 fire engines and 84 aircraft to fight these fires. While authorities are still investigating the cause of the fires, it is said to be extreme weather patterns over the last two years that made the fires much worse. The combination of young and dry vegetation, high wind speeds created conditions for the fires to start. Many organizations and people come together to help and aid the people who have been affected by these fires. Ways that you can help too include donating to disaster relief organizations, wildfire recovery funds, food banks, and fire departments. Please consider helping in any way that you can even if it means just keeping these victims in your thoughts and prayers. Anything helps.
