If it feels like this isn’t the first time the phrase ‘2024 Emmys’ has been thrown around, that’s because it isn’t. The awards that were supposed to be held for the 2023 season were delayed due to the SAGAFTRA and WGA strikes, which permitted union members from promoting any of their projects whilst negotiations were ongoing. The ceremony eventually commenced on January 15, 2024.
The program saw a record low in viewership numbers, reaching a historic low of 4.3 million. Granted, there were many things working against the Emmys: their aforementioned postponement, the Eagles-Buccaneers playoff game that ran concurrently, and the Iowa caucuses coverage that were also the same night.
However, the Emmys will be looking to bounce back this year. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 15th.
FX’s historical drama Shogun has the most nominations this year with a whopping 25. The show stands as betting favorites in many categories such as Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series. Shogun is an adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, and it chronicles the lives of an English sailor shipwrecked in Japan and a feudal lord. Praised as “gripping television” with “mesmerizing” battle sequences and respect for its source material, Shogun is the first Japanese-language series to be nominated for an Emmy and only the second non-English-language nominee.
The second-most nominated drama is HBO’s True Detective: Night Country which, despite faring poorly with viewers (its Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score is 56%), was nominated for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
FX’s The Bear set a comedy series record with 23 nominations, but its reception was also rocky. The first two seasons of the show received 92% and 93% audience ratings respectively, but the numbers for the third season fell off considerably, reaching 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it remained favorably viewed by critics. The Bear will look to continue its success from the last Emmys, where it won 10 awards.
Other notable nominees include Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building (21 nominations) and Netflix’s The Crown (18 nominations).
The 2024 Emmys will be hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy. Tune in to ABC at 8 p.m. ET to watch the ceremony!
