The Moon Tigers defeated the South Fayette Lions in the second annual Pittsburgh Holiday Hoops Classic at PPG Paints Arena. The Tigers, coming off a double-digit loss in their home opener against Chartiers Valley, looked to return to their winning ways against rivals South Fayette. On the other hand, the Lions boasted a 6-0 record coming into Sunday’s contest with the Tigers.
Moon was shorthanded coming into the game, as senior Carter Tumulty was out with an ankle injury. His absence ailed the Moon’s offense: they only scored 2 points in the first seven and a half minutes. South Fayette had an 8-4 lead after one quarter.
The Tigers played well defensively, tallying up steals and defensive boards. Several players made highlight reel-worthy blocks. However, their turnovers offset any defensive progress, and they struggled to build momentum in the first half.
The Tigers were able to string together a run thanks to a few tough finishes around the rim from Amir Turner. Moon led the Lions 19-16 at the half.
The game was truly a tale of two halves, as the Tigers controlled the tempo to start the third quarter, scoring 10 unanswered points. Moon moved the ball well in transition to get a few easy baskets. South Fayette kept fighting, but Moon was relentless in the third and had a 15-point lead entering the final frame.
The fourth quarter was uneventful, and Moon won the game 46-29. Michael Santicola led the Tigers in scoring with 12 points. Braeden Stuart and Amir Turner followed with 10 and 9, respectively.
Point guard Caden Kopay, who had 7 points with one three-pointer, was KDKA Radio’s Player of the Game. Kopay did well to distribute the ball and create opportunities for his teammates, and he consistently hustled on defense.
The game wasn’t necessarily a pretty one, but it’s still an important win for Moon. The Tigers next game is away at Bishop Canevin. Worthington Christian and Streetsboro are up next as part of the OHSBCA Shot Clock Shootout. Considering Bishop Canevin and Worthington Christian have 0-7 and 2-5 records, respectively, the Tigers should be able to secure wins before they reopen section play in the new year.
The Tigers are now 5-2 on the season.
