With the holidays approaching, I asked some Moon Area students about their holiday traditions, and the responses were as diverse as they were fascinating. From different holidays to various cultural practices, preferences, and household customs, it’s amazing to see the unique and fun activities that Moon students and their families engage in.
Many students share common traditions, such as the classic Christmas day feast, which often includes favorite foods like ham, potatoes, and corn. However, some traditions are more unique, like the Italian-rooted “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” where families enjoy a variety of seafood dishes. Other cultural foods also make an appearance, such as grape leaves, rice, and duck, highlighting the rich diversity within our community.
To get a more personal perspective, I spoke with some specific students about their holiday traditions. Eric Harper shared that he goes on a vacation every holiday breakāa tradition that sounds incredibly fun and adventurous! I also chatted with a few members of the basketball team, including Alicia Bronner, Jaiden Griggs, and Maddie Wilson. Jaiden mentioned that she opens one gift on the night before Christmas, a tradition that adds a touch of excitement to the holiday. Meanwhile, Maddie enjoys playing “hide the pickle” in the Christmas tree, a fun game that brings joy and laughter to her family.
In a broader survey conducted in my Spanish class, students shared a variety of traditions, such as hiding the pickle, caroling, attending Christmas parties, exchanging gag gifts, and participating in Secret Santa. These activities showcase the creativity and joy that Moon students bring to the holiday season.
All these fun and unique traditions are just a glimpse into how Moon students celebrate the holidays. This season, consider asking your friends and family about their traditions or even adopting a new one that could become a cherished part of your holiday celebrations for years to come!
