The Moon Boys' Golf Team
As the new school year begins, so does the excitement of fall sports, and Moon Area’s golf teams are once again stepping onto the course with high hopes and high expectations. With a past of strong performances and post-season appearances, both teams have taken on the challenges of the course again this year. Last season, the Moon girls’ golf team qualified for the WPIAL Class 3A Team Championship. Along with that both the boys’ and girls’ teams sent a combined four individual golfers to the WPIAL Golf Championship. As both teams continue to long hours of practice, face tough opponents, and rise to the challenges presented by each match. They hope to bring home many wins and have more success as the season continues.
Boy’s golf season is off to a good start as they are 9-1 in the section. Their only loss being to South Fayette with the score of 187-202. Senior Captains Cooper Fazio and Chris Brown and Juniors Matthew Koch and Ian Bonidie have been taking charge of the team all season with their impressive scores. Cooper Fazio leading the group with the best score of the season, a (-3) at Montour Heights Country Club. Fazio says, “they are improving little by little every day to the best of our ability,” reflecting the team’s mindset of constant growth and focus. The boys golf team had won the section 10 straight years in a row until last year where they came up short to place third. However, this year the players are hopeful to break through the challenges of the season and get back on the path to winning.
High on the wins of last season moon girls’ golf takes the course again ready and prepared to win bigger than they did last year. The girls’ golf team has a record of 9-2 with their only losses South Fayette and Upper Saint Clair. Yet despite the two losses the girls set an all-time school record shooting a 159 against Peters Township. The leading scorers of the team are Seniors Angelina Schild, Aubrey Marasco, and Junior Olivia Degori. With the leading score of the season a (-2) by Angelina Schild. Both Olivia Degori and Angelina Schild were sent to WIPIALS last year and are hopeful to attend again and to place higher in the competition than they did before. Junior Olivia Degori says, “We are expected to win the section this season and have had some of our players shoot their lowest rounds ever.” While the success of the season has been good there is still work that needs to be done to continue their winning record and exceed expectations of the season.
Looking ahead while it seems as though Golf has just started their season will wrap up shortly. However, with these powerful individuals and all their capabilities it seems as if post season matches will be in their future. Goodluck to teams as they continue this fall and hopefully, we are to hear more about the success of their seasons soon.
