Thailand has made history on January 23, 2025, by becoming one of the few places in Asia and the first place in southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. According to The Department of Provincial Administration, at the end of the day on Thursday, approximately 1,832 same-sex couples had married in Thailand.
After Taiwan and Nepal, Thailand is the third Asian country to legally recognize same sex marriage.
The Marriage Equality Act has been a long and difficult journey towards this significant decision. People in Thailand have tirelessly fought for years to get same-sex relationships recognized by the law. This is a huge victory for the LGBTQ+ community, and it shows that Thailand is really advancing with equality and human rights.
Now, same-sex couples in Thailand can appreciate the same rights and benefits as heterosexual couples regarding issues such as finances, adoption, inheritance, and healthcare.
However, LGBTQ couples are still facing challenges as not everyone in society is accepting of LGBTQ+ people. Nevertheless, the marriage equality law is the beginning of Thailand’s awareness of diversity and recognition of everyone’s entitlement to equal rights.
